Ajuda Palace

Ajuda Palace is located in the parish of Ajuda in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. It is a neoclassical building constructed on the site of the temporary wooden structures that housed the royal family after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Initially designed in the Baroque-Rococo style, the palace was later transformed into its current neoclassical architectural style.

The construction of Ajuda Palace began in 1796 and continued into the 19th century. During this period, the project faced multiple delays or slowdowns due to financial constraints or political conflicts. In 1807, the French invasion of Portugal forced the Portuguese royal family to flee to Brazil, resulting in extremely slow progress. A lack of funding also led to a reduction in the scale of the project, but construction resumed gradually throughout the 19th century. The palace is massive, measuring 126.75 meters in length and 113.5 meters in width. In 1861, King Luís I married here, and the palace later became the residence of Portuguese monarchs. During the 19th century, some rooms were used by the Portuguese courts.

The palace is exquisitely decorated and features both upper and lower levels. Visitors can explore the palace's rooms, where the grandeur and lavish ornamentation are truly breathtaking. In 1968, the palace opened as a museum, primarily housing decorative arts from the 15th to 20th centuries. It is also used for official celebrations.
