Palace of Necessidades

The Palace of Necessidades is a historic building located on Praça dos Restauradores in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Originally constructed as a monastery in the 18th century, it was later commissioned by King João V to be transformed into a palace. During the reign of Queen Maria II in the 19th century, the Palace of Necessidades became the royal residence of the House of Braganza, and nearly all subsequent monarchs also lived here.

During the Republican Revolution of 1910, ongoing fighting caused some damage to the Palace of Necessidades. After the establishment of the Republic on October 5, 1910, the palace remained abandoned for nearly 40 years. Around 1950, it became the headquarters of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a role it continues to serve today. The palace once housed a vast collection of royal artifacts, which were transferred to the Ajuda National Palace Museum for preservation and safekeeping.
