Palace of São Bento

The Palace of São Bento is located in the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon, near the Lisbon Upper Town. It serves as the seat of the Portuguese Parliament and is adjacent to the official residence of the Prime Minister of Portugal, making it one of the most magnificent palaces in Lisbon.

The Palace of São Bento was originally the first Benedictine monastery in Lisbon, constructed in 1598 in the Neoclassical architectural style. In 1615, a group of monks resided here. Following the Liberal Revolution of 1820, the monks were expelled, and the Portuguese Parliament began operating from the site, marking the beginning of the ancient monastery’s new function. In 1867, architects undertook renovations to enhance the building’s grandeur. The exterior steps of the Palace of São Bento were built in 1941, flanked by statues of lions on either side. At the top of the stairs is an arcade adorned with the Latin word "Lex" (Law), along with four sculptures.

Since the Carnation Revolution in 1974, the area in front of the Palace of São Bento has become one of the most iconic spaces in Lisbon. The Palace of São Bento is well worth visiting, both for its long history and its significant political importance.
