Museum of the Orient, Lisbon

The Museum of the Orient in Lisbon is located in the harbor district along the Tagus River. Housed in a former abandoned cod cold storage facility, it opened in 2008 as a museum dedicated to collecting handicrafts and precious items from various Eastern countries, with the aim of helping more Portuguese people learn about Eastern culture.

The Museum of the Orient not only provides the Portuguese people with an opportunity to understand the East, but also helps strengthen cultural ties between the East and the West. It also serves as a testament to the early stages of globalisation. The museum houses a collection of over 13,000 items gathered from various Eastern countries, including porcelain, screens, calligraphy and paintings, musical instruments, sculptures, textiles, snuff bottles, crosses, crucifixes, masks, and ornaments from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia. A significant portion of the collection consists of items produced in Asia and then exported to Europe.

To further promote cultural exchange between the East and the West, the Museum of the Orient also hosts a variety of cultural events such as temporary exhibitions, performances, and lectures, encouraging greater public participation.
