Montserrat Palace is located in Sintra, the traditional summer retreat of the Portuguese court. It was built in 1858 for Sir Francis Cook, a British baron, and designed by the British architect James Knowles Jr.

This distinctive villa was constructed on the site of a former chapel, retaining Mughal architectural details — a unique feature in Portugal. However, its eclecticism, along with other nearby palaces such as Pena Palace, represents the finest examples of Sintra Romanticism. The palace showcases the romanticism of Oriental architecture, with its towering round towers and spherical structures that are highly eye-catching, giving visitors the feeling of stepping into a romantic royal palace. Montserrat Palace appeared in the 1996 TV series "Gulliver's Travels," and the palace on screen becomes even more enchanting.
