Portuguese Navy Museum

The Navy Museum is located in the Belém district of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and primarily tells the story of Portugal's maritime history. Established in 1963, it is one of the most popular and most visited museums in Portugal.

The history of the Navy Museum is closely linked to King Luís I, who had a deep interest in marine research and was also an accomplished navigator. He began collecting various items related to Portugal’s maritime history in 1863. It was due to his persistent efforts that the collection continued to grow, eventually leading to the establishment of this highly popular Navy Museum in 1963. Portugal’s maritime history dates back to the 15th century, and the museum houses historical paintings, archaeological findings, and a vast array of Portuguese ship models related to navigation. The collection includes ships from the 15th century to the present day, with a dazzling variety of ship models in different sizes that narrate Portugal’s glorious seafaring past and the rich culture embedded within it.

Among the most striking exhibits in the Navy Museum is an 18th-century luxury yacht once used by Queen Maria I. This yacht was in service for two centuries and was used by many members of the Portuguese royal family.
