Christiania

Christiania is an artificial island located near Copenhagen, Denmark, covering an area of 3.34 square kilometers. It mainly consists of three small islands in the north, collectively known as Holmen. It was ordered to be built by Christian IV in the early 17th century, primarily to expand the then defenses of Copenhagen. Initially established as a privileged trading town, it gradually merged with Copenhagen as it developed. The harbor area was often filled with many ships, making it one of the most nautical districts in Copenhagen.

Christiania is famous for the Christiania Free Town located here. The residents of the Free Town are mostly hippies, free-spirited artists, grassroots activists, rock musicians, and other residents with strong liberal styles. It has long been renowned for its inclusiveness. Unlike the urban landscape of Copenhagen, the Free Town resembles more of a rural area, with buildings painted by artists in a strong Bohemian style. In the early years of King Christian IV’s reign, he planned the new urban district of Copenhagen—Christiania Harbour—and many surrounding buildings and castles, which to this day continue to attract numerous tourists to Copenhagen.
