Copenhagen's Church of Our Saviour

The Church of Our Saviour is located in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is a magnificent Baroque church known for its twisted spire, external spiral staircase, and the largest carillon in Northern Europe. It is one of Denmark’s most famous and popular cathedrals.

The Church of Our Saviour is built in the Dutch Baroque style with a Greek cross layout. Its construction began in 1682, was completed and opened in 1695, but the permanent altar was not installed until 1732. The plans for the spire were not made until 1747 during the reign of King Frederick V, and the spire itself was completed in 1752. Upon the spire’s completion in 1752, the king held a tower-climbing ceremony. The spire stands 90 meters tall and is inspired by the Sant’Ivo alla Sapienza church in Rome, Italy. Visitors can climb the church’s spiral staircase to the top for panoramic views of central Copenhagen.

This grand cathedral is also famous for having the largest carillon in Northern Europe, which plays melodies from eight in the morning until midnight every day, attracting countless visitors from around the world.
