The Seven Star Lake Desert Ecotourism Resort is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

The Seven Star Lake Desert Ecotourism Area is located in the heart of the Kubuqi Desert within Hanggin Banner, Ordos City. It is a resort-style desert tourism destination themed around desert ecological conservation, built around desert resources and lakes, and highlighted by desert ecotourism.

The Seven Star Lake Desert Ecotourism Area covers a total area of 8.89 square kilometers, including a water surface area of 1.15 square kilometers for the Seven Star Lakes, a reed wetland area of 0.1 square kilometer, and grassland covering 3.8 square kilometers. The Seven Star Lakes are residual impact lakes from an ancient course of the Yellow River. They are named "Seven Star Lake" because the seven lakes are arranged in the shape of the Big Dipper, hence the saying “the Big Dipper in the sky, the Seven Star Lakes on earth.”

The Seven Star Lake Desert Ecotourism Area is a vast expanse of sand with strangely shaped, towering dunes standing like barriers all around. It is also full of lakes with rippling blue waters, tranquil and beautiful. This is the Seven Star Lake Tourist Area, located in the heart of the Kubuqi Desert within Hanggin Banner, Ordos City. It is 14 kilometers from the Bahang Highway, 60 kilometers from National Highway 110 and the Beijing-Lanzhou Railway, 140 kilometers from Baotou—the Steel City on the Grassland, 330 kilometers from Hohhot, and 800 kilometers from Beijing. It is a national 3A-level comprehensive tourism area primarily offering desert ecological sightseeing, along with entertainment, leisure, vacation, and exploration activities.

Seven Star Lake Tourist Area

Among them, the three lakes—Zahan Datu, Dongda Datu, and Dadatu (also called Yike Datu)—are collectively known as Datu Lake. Legendary tales have endowed them with a romantic aura. Legend has it that there used to be a magical bird here called the water buffalo bird, with eyes as big as bowls, legs as thick as wooden pillars, a body as large as a cow’s, yet it hovered in the air as lightly as a feather and let out a cow-like “moo.” Many birds and beasts regarded it as a monster and would hide at the sight of its shadow. Local Mongolian herders believed this bird could ward off disasters and bring good fortune, so they named it Datu, which translates to “resonance” in Chinese. The three lakes are separated by sand dunes, surrounded by clean air and clear waters, resembling three sapphires embedded in the Kubuqi Desert. The lakes are lush with reeds and rich in aquatic resources, providing habitat for over ten rare bird species.
