Site of the May 1st Meeting
The Site of the May 1st Meeting is a cultural tourism attraction, a classic red tourism site, and a patriotic education base.
The Site of the May 1st Meeting is located on the east side of Wuyi North Road in the urban area. It is a hall built with blue bricks. It earned its name because from April 23 to May 1, 1947, the People's Congress of Inner Mongolia was held here, during which the first autonomous government of an ethnic minority in China — the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Government — was proclaimed. The hall was built in 1935. It previously served as the auditorium of the puppet Xing'an Army Officer School, the auditorium of the East Mongolia Military and Political Cadre School, and later the auditorium of the Inner Mongolia Party School. In 1986, it was listed as an autonomous region-level key cultural relics protection unit, and in 1995, it was designated as an autonomous region-level patriotic education base. The May 1st Meeting Site is a two-story building with a gable roof, covered in blue bricks and gray tiles, facing west with its back to the east. It is 94.5 meters long from east to west and 24.7 meters wide from north to south, with a construction area of 708.5 square meters and a site area of 2,334.15 square meters. Along the central axis are, in sequence, a fence, an entrance hall, an exhibition hall, a fireplace, a podium, dressing rooms, and storage rooms. The area in front of the site is covered with lush green grass and blooming flowers. Inside the site, there is an exhibition titled “The Revolutionary Struggle History of the Xing'an Region,” displaying over 300 photos and artifacts that authentically record the heroic struggle and fight for liberation of the grassland people under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
From April 23 to May 1, 1947, the People's Representatives Meeting of Inner Mongolia was held here. The 392 delegates who decided the fate of Inner Mongolia unanimously supported the implementation of regional ethnic autonomy under the leadership of the Communist Party of China in the Inner Mongolia region, setting a shining example for the practice of regional autonomy for ethnic minorities nationwide. After a brief voting ceremony, the meeting elected Ulanhu and Ha Feng'e as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Government, respectively. The successful convening of this meeting marked a great victory for the Inner Mongolia national liberation movement led by the Communist Party of China. As a symbol of the great victory of the Communist Party of China’s policy of regional ethnic autonomy, the May 1st Meeting Site is an important landmark showcasing ethnic unity and progress in Inner Mongolia.
Currently, the hall of the “May 1st” Meeting Site displays “A Brief History of the Revolutionary Struggle in the Xing'an League Region.” The exhibition is divided into five sections: Crimes of Japanese Invaders in China, the Rise of the Autonomous Region Movement, the Establishment of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Government, Support for the National Liberation War, and Eternal Glory to Revolutionary Martyrs. It authentically reflects the difficult yet glorious journey undertaken by revolutionary predecessors in leading people of all ethnic groups in their struggle.
