Attraction Introduction The capital of the Kabardino-Balkar Autonomous Republic in Russia. Located at the northern foothills of the Greater Caucasus Mountains, on the banks of the Nalchik River. Population: 227,000 (1985). Founded between 1817 and 1818, it became a city in 1921. It is a railway hub. The local industries mainly include machine tools, non-ferrous metallurgy, instrument manufacturing, and meat processing. It is home to the Kabardino-Balkar Institute of History, Language, Folklore, and Economics. Features It is one of the North Caucasus' key destinations for mountaineering, tourism, and health resorts. There are also higher education institutions here.
