During this time, Tverskaya Street, the city center’s main thoroughfare, will offer visitors a special gift: the “privilege to stroll.” For three days of festivities, vehicle access to Tverskaya Street will be restricted, transforming it into a beautiful pedestrian street filled with amazing performances, live
music concerts, sports entertainment, circus acts, dance performances, fun masterclasses, and unique photo zones that will keep your eyes busy. This year’s festival theme is “New Year of Childhood,” meaning everyone who visits will be immersed in a magical, whimsical, and childlike world—revisiting childhood and experiencing its simplicity and joy. All festival activities are free to attend.Four uniquely styled squares themed around winter holidays of different eras will appear on Tverskaya Street. Near buildings 15, 16, and 17, visitors can travel back to the New Year celebrations of the 1950s and 60s, while the festive atmosphere of the 1970s and 80s will spread around building 9. Then, the vibes of the 1990s and 2000s will take over the start of Tverskaya Street. Connected streets, Mohovaya Street and Hunter’s Row, will be dedicated to vibrant and innovative modernity.
So, how can you spend this most important Russian holiday in Moscow?
First, don’t miss the free performances. The festival team has organized 120 shows, all taking place on a specially built New Year stage within the festival grounds.
For example, the CITY Symphony Orchestra and actors from the Moscow Music Theatre will present spectacular opera performances such as “Cinderella,” the operetta “Die Fledermaus,” and musicals like Mamma Mia. The Bolshoi Theatre and National Theatre will take you on an “opera journey” through the world of opera, while popular Russian pop stars will perform hit songs.
In addition, the prestigious Russian National Theatre award “Golden Mask” has prepared about 300 stunning street theater performances for visitors. A variety of theatrical games and interactive shows will unfold right on the bustling streets, among the crowds.
The on-site sports shows and circus performances are sure to win your heart too. Acrobats and athletes will deliver eye-catching acts: high-wire walking, pole balancing, skate parks (built directly on the street), stunts, and high-speed motorcycle performances inside cages—so much to see, you won’t want to leave.
Dreamy colorful light installations and more than 90 eye-catching artworks, including an exclusive Christmas tree, will create an indescribably beautiful world for visitors. 3D New Year cartoon character sculptures, a five-meter-wide disco ball light, and a fountain of flames are just some of the artistic installations competing for your attention—there’s something for everyone.
Of course, restaurant owners across the capital will also “capture” your taste buds with special holiday dishes.
This is the second time Tverskaya Street has hosted a New Year carnival, with 2.7 million people participating in last year’s celebration.
