Selfie Stick Self-Defense: Moscow Martial Arts Class Teaches Tourists How to Protect Themselves

Almost everyone has a selfie stick, and unlike other martial arts weapons, it can even be taken on airplanes. Spotting its potential and addressing tourists’ frequent pickpocketing issues in travel hotspots, a Moscow martial arts school has launched a course to teach visitors how to defend themselves using a selfie stick.

According to the UK’s Daily Mail,due to the increasing number of people being targeted by thieves or pickpockets while taking selfies, this self-defense course was created specifically to tackle this issue.

The course manager stated that classes fill up as soon as they open. The self-defense technique is based on an ancient Okinawan weapon, with the selfie stick integrated into the method along with some improvisation.

However, selfie sticks come with their own potential dangers. According to the latest data, more travelers have died from selfie-related accidents this year than from shark attacks—most incidents occurred due to falls while taking selfies or failing to notice moving vehicles nearby.
