In 1532, to celebrate the birth of a prince (who later became Tsar Ivan IV), this Church of the Ascension was built on the royal estate of Kolomenskoye near Moscow. It is one of the earliest traditional churches in Russia featuring a brick-and-stone lower structure with a wooden roof, and it had a tremendous impact on the development of Russian ecclesiastical architectural style.

Standing tall on the steep banks of the Moscow River is the grand ancient Kolomenskoye Estate, a scene that has become a unique landmark in people’s hearts. Spanning both sides of the Moscow River, the estate covers an expansive area of 390 hectares.
