Pushkin Square

Pushkin Square is located in the center of Moscow. It was formerly known as "Strastnoy Square" because a monastery for ascetics once stood there. In 1937, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Russia’s great poet Alexander Pushkin, the Soviet government renamed Strastnoy Square to Pushkin Square.

Pushkin was a great Russian national poet, the creator of the Russian literary language, and a founder of modern Russian literature. He is hailed as the “Sun of Russian Poetry” and the “Father of Russian Literature,” producing art of world-class quality and representing the spiritual life of Russia. At the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Pushkin, funded by public donations and unveiled to the public in 1880. The statue, about four meters tall, depicts a handsome and dignified Pushkin with a thoughtful expression that carries a hint of a smile. His flowing curls and thick beard exude the aura of a poet.

June 6th is the birthday of Russia’s great poet Alexander Pushkin. Every year on this day, Pushkin Square in Moscow turns into an ocean of poetry. People come bearing flowers to pay tribute at Pushkin’s statue, reciting his immortal works aloud or sharing their own poems, creating a truly spectacular scene.
