Standing 81 meters tall, Ivan the Great Bell Tower is the tallest structure in the Moscow Kremlin complex. In ancient times, it served as a signal tower and watchtower, and could rightly be called the world’s tallest beacon tower. The tower is predominantly white in color and features a domed architecture. Climbing up the narrow, spiraling staircase inside to reach the top floor offers a sudden sense of openness — standing atop the tower and looking out over the entire city of Moscow, you can see up to 30 Russian versts in every direction.

The bell tower houses twenty-two large bells and more than thirty smaller ones, reaching a height of eighty meters, making for an impressive sight. When the ancient bells ring, their sound can be heard from very far away. It is said that at night, when standing at the foot of Ivan the Great Bell Tower, colorful halos seem to emanate from within, creating a stunning view. The tower is an extremely sturdy structure that no one can climb through the walls — if you want to get in, you’d have to turn into a small cat. To the left of the tower lies a massive 40-ton cannon, while to the right sits what was once considered the heaviest bell in the world, known as the “Tsar Bell.”
