Tverskaya Street

Tverskaya Street is a major street situated in the heart of Moscow, the capital of Russia. With a total length of 1.6 kilometers, it is the center of shopping, entertainment, and nightlife in the city, and houses the Moscow City Hall. The street starts in the south at the renowned Manege Square, extends northwest in the direction of Russia’s second-largest city, Saint Petersburg, and ends at Garden Ring. Beyond that lie First Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street, Leningradsky Prospekt, and the Leningrad Highway. Along its route, it intersects with Moscow's Boulevard Ring at Pushkin Square and meets Triumphal Square at the Garden Ring. On the global list of commercial street rental prices, Tverskaya Street ranks third, following New York's Fifth Avenue and Paris's Champs-Élysées.

From 1932 to 1990, Tverskaya Street was known as Gorky Street, named after the Soviet writer Maxim Gorky. After 1990, it reverted to its original name, Tverskaya Street. Historical records indicate that the street existed as early as the 12th century, and since the 17th century, it has been a residential area for Moscow’s nobility. In the 19th century, several triumphal arches were erected on the street to commemorate victories over Napoleon and to celebrate the coronation of tsars. Today, it has become one of Moscow’s most famous tourist and shopping destinations. The street features a blend of splendid opera houses, museums, modern shops, and entertainment venues, offering an overwhelming array of sights.
