Alexander Park

Alexander Park is located outside the western long wall of the Moscow Kremlin. It consists of three sections: Upper Park, Middle Park, and Lower Park, stretching 865 meters all the way to the famous Manege Square. As one of Moscow’s first urban parks, it is clean, well-maintained, and decorated with a variety of flowers, trees, sculptures, and fountains, making it one of the favorite recreational spots for Muscovites.

Alexander Park was built on the former bed of the Neglinnaya River after it was redirected into an underground conduit. The reconstruction took place between 1819 and 1823, and the park was later named after Tsar Alexander I of Russia. The park boasts beautiful scenery and is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, built on the eve of Victory Day in 1967. In front of the tomb burns an eternal flame, which has been alight since its inauguration. The memorial bears the inscription: “Your name is unknown, your deed is immortal.” Foreign delegations typically pay their respects at the tomb and lay wreaths. Many Muscovites also choose Alexander Park as the site for their weddings, where they offer flowers to the unknown heroes in a gesture of reverence. The ceremonial Guard of Honor No. 1, formerly stationed at Lenin’s Mausoleum, has recently been relocated to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. If you’re lucky, you might witness the changing of the guard ceremony.
