State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is situated between Red Square and Manege Square in the capital city of Moscow. It was founded in 1872 and officially opened to the public in 1883. The museum boasts the richest collection of historical and cultural relics in Russia. Since its opening, it has never been closed for any reason—even during World War II when Moscow was under siege by German forces—maintaining uninterrupted operation. As such, this museum not only reflects the history of Russia but also stands as one of the country’s largest scientific and educational institutions.

The State Historical Museum boasts an extremely rich collection, currently comprising 48 exhibition halls that display artifacts arranged in chronological order. By 1996, the museum had amassed over 4.2 million cultural relics and 68 million pages of archival documents, making it a treasure trove of Russia's cultural and artistic heritage. A vast array of these collections systematically showcases Russia’s long-standing history, culture, and craftsmanship. The museum has also established a dedicated academic research institution, publishing papers and books related to its precious collections, all in an effort to preserve and promote Russian culture.
