Tretyakov Gallery

The Tretyakov Gallery is located in Moscow, the capital of Russia, and is currently the world’s largest art museum dedicated to Russian paintings. According to statistics, the gallery houses a collection of 130,000 items, spanning various periods from the 11th to the 20th century, including over 40,000 Russian icons from the 17th and 18th centuries, works by renowned Russian painters of the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as pieces by many artists from the Soviet era.

The Tretyakov Gallery was founded in 1856 by Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov (1832–1898), a merchant and art collector who was one of the most prominent art patrons and supporters of painters in 19th-century Russia. In 1892, Tretyakov donated his entire collection to the state, and the gallery became a national museum. In 1902, a new building designed by artist Viktor Vasnetsov was constructed in the Russian fairy-tale style south of the Kremlin. The gallery expanded throughout the 20th century to include surrounding buildings and has since grown into its current form.
