Luzhniki Stadium

The full name of Luzhniki Stadium is the Grand Sports Arena of the Luzhniki Olympic Complex. Located in downtown Moscow, Russia, it is the largest stadium in the country. As an important part of the Luzhniki Olympic Sports Complex, it has a total seating capacity of 84,745 and serves as the home stadium for two Russian Premier League teams — Torpedo Moscow and Spartak Moscow. However, since it is not a dedicated football stadium, there is a running track surrounding the pitch between the stands and the field.

Luzhniki Stadium is a five-star stadium rated by UEFA and has successfully hosted numerous major events since its establishment. For example, it was the main venue for the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, where it hosted athletics, the football final, and equestrian competitions, among other key events, with a then-record spectator capacity of 103,000. Additionally, the stadium also hosted the finals of the 1957 Ice Hockey World Championship, where the Soviet Union played against Sweden in front of 55,000 spectators, setting a world record for attendance at that tournament. The 2008 UEFA Champions League Final was also held here, making it the first Eastern European stadium to host the Champions League final.

Looking ahead, the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place at Luzhniki Stadium on July 8. With this, the stadium will become the fourth venue in history to host both the FIFA World Cup final and the UEFA Champions League final, following the Olympic Stadium in Rome, the Olympic Stadium in Munich, and Wembley Stadium in London.
