Central Armed Forces Museum of Russia

The Central Armed Forces Museum of Russia, also known as the Soviet Red Army Museum, is located in the northern part of Moscow, near the Red Army Theatre. In front of the museum’s main entrance, there is a tank and a cannon on either side, making it immediately obvious to passersby that this is a military museum.

Historically, the first public display of the military strength of the Soviet Republic and the Red Army took place in 1919, when Lenin attended the opening ceremony held at what is now GUM (State Department Store) in Moscow, followed by a grand military parade on Red Square. Over time, as the Central Armed Forces Museum of Russia continued to grow, it has amassed an increasing number of significant Soviet-era military artifacts and relics, documenting the nation’s military past. Today, the museum houses over 700,000 exhibits, among which the most important are those displayed in Hall No. 25.

The museum’s most prized exhibitions are dedicated to the Great Patriotic War (World War II), including the Victory Banner, battle flags used on the front lines, and the Victory Banner symbolizing the defeat of the Nazis in 1945. It also displays banners, weapons, documents, photos, and medals from the Russian Civil War. Additionally, there is a section focused on post-World War II military equipment of the Red Army, covering the Soviet Army’s modern development and the Cold War era, making it a comprehensive museum for understanding the history and might of the Russian Army.
