Elche

Elche is located in the province of Alicante, in the Valencian Autonomous Community of Spain. It is the third most populous city in the Valencian Community and the 20th most populous city in Spain. The city has been renowned since the 5th century BC as a representative site of Iberian art. In 1897, a polychrome stone bust known as the "Lady of Elche" was discovered and is believed to be an artifact of the Iberian people.

The most worthwhile attractions in Elche include the Palmeral (date palm grove), which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the only surviving Arab-style agricultural area on the European continent, and its medieval irrigation system is still in operation today. The city’s diverse museums are also not to be missed, including the Elche Museum of Paleontology, the Palm Grove Museum, the Elche Archaeological and Historical Museum, and the Elche City of Festivals Museum. Elche is also home to a long-standing art form called the “Mystery Play of Elche,” a liturgical musical drama performed annually on August 14 and 15. It was inscribed in 2001 as one of the first items on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, reflecting the linguistic and cultural identity of the Valencian people.
