Castellón de la Plana

Castellón de la Plana is a city in the Valencian Autonomous Community of Spain and the capital of Castellón Province. It is situated on the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea. Originally occupied by the Moors, the city began to flourish in 1233 after the Moors were driven out by King James I of Aragon. It is now home to the renowned Jaime I University of Spain.

During the Middle Ages, Castellón de la Plana was protected by a moat, city walls, and watchtowers, so many of its historic buildings are located within the compact old town. These include the Gothic St. Mary's Cathedral built in the 13th century, the City Hall with its beautiful Tuscan-style façade, the El Fadrí bell tower constructed in the 15th century, and the Bishop’s Palace from the 18th century.

It is also a vibrant modern city. The Castellón Museum of Modern Art is the best place to appreciate local art. Near Plaza Mayor, there are numerous Gothic and Renaissance-era buildings, some of which have been converted into restaurants and taverns. The clean streets are lined with exquisitely decorated shops, making it perfect for leisurely shopping.
