The Brabo Fountain

The Brabo Fountain (Brabofontein) is a fountain in the Belgian city of Antwerp, located on the Grote Markt in front of the Antwerp City Hall. The Brabo Fountain takes visitors into the myth of the river Scheldt’s origins. The terrifying giant Druon Antigoon used to prey on the first sailors of the Scheldt. Fortunately, the brave soldier Brabo killed him, cut off his right hand, and threw it into the river. The hand is "hand," and throwing is "werpen"—thus Antwerp got its name.

This dynamic piece, the Brabo Fountain, was created by Jef Lambeaux, one of Belgium’s most outstanding sculptors of the 19th century. Perhaps most remarkably, the water sprays are blown by the wind and land on passersby. The water falls directly onto the paved stone floor of the square, whose slight incline acts as a basin that collects the scattered water.
