Leiden Observatory

Leiden Observatory is an astronomical observatory in Leiden, South Holland Province, the Netherlands. In 1633, Leiden University built the observatory to house the Snellius quadrant. It is currently the oldest university observatory still in operation in the world. Previously, astronomy taught at medieval universities was mostly theoretical, and astronomical observations were typically carried out using private instruments rather than university observatories.

Initially, the observatory used the rooftop of the main building of Leiden University located on Rapenburg as its observation platform. In 1860, a large modern observatory was erected on Witte Singel. This building served as the home of the Astronomy Department until the department moved to the Science Campus in the northwest of Leiden in 1974. Although professional astronomical observations are no longer conducted in Leiden, the department still refers to itself as "Leiden Observatory." Today, astronomers conduct their research at larger observatories, such as the Very Large Telescope, a major optical telescope built by the European Southern Observatory in Chile.

Leiden Observatory is the largest astronomical research department in the Netherlands and enjoys international recognition, with research covering numerous fields within astronomy. Many renowned astronomers and physicists have worked at Leiden Observatory, such as Willem de Sitter, Ejnar Hertzsprung, and Jan Oort, all of whom have served as directors.
