Spring has come again, and one thing I’ve been eager to do is cycle through the Dutch flower fields.
Most people choose to visit the Keukenhof Tulip Park, but I prefer the freedom of exploring farm landscapes and having a picnic by the canal, so I opted to bike the Bloemen Route from Haarlem to Leiden.
I rented a bike at Haarlem Railway Station for just €6.5 for the whole day, with the latest return time at midnight—pretty cheap. Unfortunately, luck was mixed: I started off in heavy rain, but was lucky enough to catch a flower parade when I reached Lisse. Just as I was enjoying myself, it turned out that my bad luck had only just begun.
After viewing the first flower field, dark clouds quickly approached in the distance. I thought it was rain, but it turned out to be hail (visible in the photo as the dark clouds). Riding next to the farmland, there was nowhere to take shelter, so I pedaled for dear life. Five minutes later, I found the awning of an office building which saved me—but my head and back were killing me.
After that, there was constant strong wind, making cycling much harder. The flower fields were truly beautiful, and fortunately the weather improved afterward, but I was already half-exhausted.
Eventually, I wasn’t in the mood to admire the scenery carefully and ended up cycling until it got dark before returning to Haarlem. In the end, the entire trip took over seven hours. Next time, I should spend the night in Leiden so I can fully enjoy the annual field rainbow.
