De Valk City Windmill Museum

De Valk City Windmill Museum is located in Leiden, South Holland, the Netherlands, and is the third windmill to stand on this same site. In 1611, a standerdmolen (post mill) was built here; in 1667, a wooden stellingmolen (tower mill) was erected; in 1743, a taller stone windmill was constructed. Today, the windmill serves as a municipal windmill museum and has been in operation again since the year 2000.

The De Valk City Windmill seen today is the stone windmill built in 1743. It was once a grain mill with seven floors, all of which are open to visitors. The exhibition rooms are mainly located on the first and second floors, where the miller’s bedroom used to be. Now, they mainly house display cabinets containing tools related to milling, books, equipment, and antique Dutch instruments. On the first floor, you can watch a short video introducing the development history of the windmill museum. The second floor showcases the former status of the Leiden Millers’ Guild, the Leiden mills, the history of the windmill museum, as well as the grain and flour trade, including instruments used for taking grain samples and testing grain quality. Additionally, the other five floors also provide detailed insights into the workings of the mill in those days and are worth exploring carefully.

De Valk City Windmill Museum not only serves as a museum showcasing the history of milling but has also become a beautiful landmark of the city of Leiden. The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Tuesday through Saturday, and from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sundays and public holidays. It is closed on Mondays.
