Sieboldhuis

The Sieboldhuis is a museum located in Leiden, South Holland, the Netherlands, exhibiting collections gathered by Philipp Franz von Siebold from Dejima, the Dutch trading port in Nagasaki, Japan. It also serves as a museum showcasing Japanese culture.

The Sieboldhuis consists of four houses originally built in the 15th century and consolidated into a single residence in the early 16th century. The earliest known private owner was Paulus Buys. Over the years, the property changed hands several times, mostly among magistrates, council members, or wealthy local merchants, which is why the building's construction and decoration are notably refined. Philipp Franz von Siebold was also one of its many owners, though he did not reside there for long. After purchasing the house, he used it to display his collection of Japanese art and artifacts.

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Dutch-Japanese relations, the building was converted into a museum within seven months in 2000. It was thoroughly renovated and restored to its former glory. In early 2005, the newly refurbished Sieboldhuis opened to the public. Today, the three floors of the building include on the ground floor a reception room, an antechamber, a projection room, a panoramic room, and a room for flora and fauna exhibits; the second floor houses a treasure room and a map room; and the third floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Some of the exhibits are particularly valuable and commemorative, making them well worth seeing.
