Leiden

Leiden is a city in the Dutch province of South Holland, situated on the Old Rhine River. Its southern end lies 20 kilometers from The Hague, the seat of the central government, while its northern end is about 40 kilometers from Amsterdam, making it the sixth-largest urban agglomeration in the Netherlands. It has been a university town since 1575 and is home to Leiden University and Leiden University Medical Center.

Leiden is the most worthwhile city to visit in South Holland, featuring numerous museums, churches, and historic buildings. The Leiden University Hortus Botanicus is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, where thousands of plant species offer the perfect place to appreciate natural beauty. The Leiden Textile Workers’ House Museum showcases the residences of textile workers and core activities in the surrounding area, along with textile demonstrations. The Leiden Cloth Hall Municipal Museum features artworks created by Golden Age painters; Leiden Observatory is currently the oldest continuously operating university observatory in the world.
