Augustin Museum

The Augustin Museum is the finest art museum in Toulouse, France, housing a collection of sculptural artworks and paintings ranging from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The paintings come from across France, while the sculptures consist of an extensive collection of Roman works, representing the unique Occitan culture.

The museum is housed in a building constructed in 1309 in the Gothic architectural style. Before the French Revolution, this site was home to the Augustinian monastery. The monastery was secularized in 1793 and opened to the public as the Augustin Museum on August 27, 1795, making it one of the oldest museums in France after the Louvre.

The museum’s collection includes more than 4,000 items, featuring artifacts from Italian, Flemish, and ecclesiastical schools, as well as works by renowned artists such as Rubens, Le Perugin, and notable 16th- to 20th-century French painters including Lorrain and Manet. Inside the monastery is a church with two beautiful cloisters. The red-brick structure features large street-facing windows, allowing a glimpse of the ancient Roman sculptures on display inside—standing here feels like stepping back in time.
