Musée Saint-Raymond

The Musée Saint-Raymond is a renowned museum of ancient art located in Toulouse, France. It houses an extensive collection of sculpted sarcophagi and gold Gallic metal collars, among other artifacts. According to statistical data, the museum attracted between sixty and eighty thousand visitors annually between 2006 and 2010.

The museum is housed in a hospital built in the 11th century. By the 12th century, the building had been transformed into a university, and in 1975 it became the Musée Saint-Raymond. It is one of the few surviving medieval academic buildings in Toulouse today. The museum's exhibits are exquisitely displayed. The first floor showcases findings from the mysterious Chiragan Villa, discovered 60 kilometers southwest of Toulouse, including reliefs and Roman marble sculptures. There is also an early Christian cemetery, excavated beneath the museum between 1994 and 1996, featuring a lime kiln, hundreds of graves, and several inscriptions. The second floor displays Roman emperor busts, second only to the collection at the Louvre. These statues were excavated as early as 1826 and include representations of Roman emperors, their two wives, and several unidentified dignitaries.
