Toulouse Natural History Museum

The Toulouse Natural History Museum is a museum full of exploration, discovery, and fun that greatly satisfies one’s curiosity about natural history. It was established in 1796 by the naturalist Philippe-Isidore Picot de Lapeyrouse and opened to the public in 1865. Thanks to the joint efforts of Émile Cartailhac, Jean-Baptiste Noulet, and Eugène Trutat, the museum became the world's first to feature a prehistoric gallery.

In 2007, the museum moved to a completely new building redesigned by architect Jean-Paul Viguier. The museum houses a collection of 2.5 million items, covering fields such as botany, entomology, mineralogy, ornithology, osteology, paleontology, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Its permanent exhibitions are divided into five main themes. The first is “Feeling the Power of the Earth,” which explores the nature and formation of the solar system, along with the Earth's natural characteristics such as plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanic activity, erosion, petrology, and mineralogy. The second theme is “Beyond Our Conceptual Levels,” which delves into the essence of life, including biodiversity, classification, and organization. The third is “Facing the Tremendous Energy of the Earth,” tracing time, paleontology, and the evolutionary journey of life from its early history 380 million years ago. The fourth theme is “Acknowledging the Obvious Facts,” focusing on the primary functions of living beings—feeding, breathing, moving, reproducing, protecting, and communicating. The fifth theme is “Creating the Future,” highlighting the impact of human activities and the resulting pressures on ecosystems and natural resources.
