Taiyuan Baiyun Temple

Taiyuan Baiyun Temple is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

Baiyun Temple, commonly known as Nanshifangyuan, is located in Hongtugou, 8 kilometers southeast of downtown Taiyuan. Among the many Fangyuan temples in the city, it stands out for its grand scale, unique layout, and serene environment, earning the top ranking among them. It is one of the most renowned attractions in Taiyuan. The temple makes use of the undulating terrain of the gully to carve out stone steps; ascending these leads to the Mountain Gate Hall, above which hangs a plaque inscribed with the three gold-lettered characters “Baiyun Temple.” The lintels of the side doors are inscribed with “Zhenjing” (True Realm) and “Guangmei” (Radiant Slumber). A pair of stone lions are placed in front of the temple, creating an aura of solemnity and seclusion. Inside the hall, the Four Heavenly Kings are sculpted at the four corners, while the Big-Bellied Maitreya Buddha sits in the center. Behind the Maitreya Buddha is Skanda (Weituo), clad in armor and holding a vajra. There are typically two styles of Weituo statues: one with palms pressed together and the vajra laid horizontally across both wrists, and the other with the right hand on the hip and the left hand gripping the tip of the vajra planted on the ground. The posture of Weituo holding the vajra holds significant meaning. According to Buddhist tradition, temples where the Weituo statue has palms pressed together and the vajra laid horizontally across both wrists are considered “reception temples.” Conversely, those where the Weituo’s vajra is planted on the ground and the right hand rests on the hip are not reception temples—wandering monks and nuns can easily tell the difference. This temple’s Weituo has palms pressed together with the vajra laid horizontally across both wrists, clearly marking it as a reception temple. So-called reception temples are meant to host wandering monks from all directions, hence this temple is also known as the “Fangyuan Temple,” or simply “Fangyuan.” Since it is situated south of the city, it is also called “Nanshifangyuan,” corresponding to Qianshou Temple, known as the “Beishifangyuan” or “North Fangyuan,” in the northern part of the city.
