When it comes to Asian-style architecture in Paris, the first thing that comes to mind is the museum and gardens named after Albert Kahn, located in the suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt. Albert Kahn was a French Jew born in Alsace who made a fortune by investing in gold and gemstone mines in South Africa, becoming one of Europe’s wealthiest individuals. He later founded his own bank, participated in issuing international bonds, and was actively involved in philanthropy. In 1895, after purchasing four hectares of land along the Seine in Boulogne, he began constructing his dream garden.

The Kahn Museum was established in 1986 and includes both a collection of paintings, sculptures, and the renowned “Archives of the Planet” photographic exhibitions, as well as the gardens. The gardens span four hectares and feature lush woods, blooming flowers, and breathtaking scenery. The most important part of Kahn’s garden is the Japanese garden, which includes a traditional Japanese village and a modern Japanese-style garden with meandering paths, small bridges over flowing water, and a shallow pond teeming with goldfish. The hillsides covered with azaleas around the pond are designed to resemble Mount Fuji. During cherry blossom season, the Japanese charm of Kahn’s garden becomes even more irresistible.

In addition to the Japanese garden, the grounds also feature an English garden, forests inspired by the Vosges Mountains, a “blue” forest, a golden forest, and lawns. These diverse garden styles were meticulously designed and created by Kahn and his team of landscape architects to create a harmonious atmosphere. Strolling through them, surrounded by vibrant flora, you hardly notice the transitions between different styles—only a sense of peace and delight.
