Hessian State Theatre

The Hessian State Theatre is located north of the Warmer Damm in Wiesbaden’s city park, Germany, close to the Kurhaus (spa building). It is one of Germany’s most successful German-language theatres. The theatre was built between 1892 and 1894 by architects from Vienna. Emperor Wilhelm II. oversaw the construction of this Neo-Renaissance-style building, which features Greek architectural elements and lavish decorations, leading to its initial name as the New Royal Court Theatre.

The luxurious Rococo-style auditorium foyer was added during an expansion in 1902; the main building houses a late Baroque-style grand theatre that is truly splendid and magnificent. The theatre colonnade, built in 1839, has now become part of the Bowling Green park area in Wiesbaden. The theatre stages a variety of performances including opera, drama, and ballet, and offers over 20 diverse and innovative productions. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy spectacular shows featuring both classical works and modern musicals as well as contemporary literary dramas. With four stages operating simultaneously, the theatre sometimes hosts up to four different performances in a single day.
