A city in northeastern Iran and the capital of Khorasan Province. With a population of 1.12 million (1982), it is the second-largest city in Iran. Historically, it served as a trade hub between northern Iran, Central Asia, and Afghanistan. The city has industries such as textiles, leather and leather goods, beet sugar, rice milling, flour milling, brewing, fruit processing, and carpet weaving.
