"Hama Waterwheels" Tourist Attraction Introduction This photo was taken of the giant waterwheels on the Orontes River in Hama, the fourth-largest city in Syria. Historically, Hama has been known as the "City of Waterwheels." Some of the large waterwheels here have diameters of up to 27 meters and were mainly used to draw water for irrigating farmland. The waterwheels of Hama originated during the era of Roman rule over Syria, and today these still-functioning waterwheels in the fields have become a symbol of Hama and a unique rural attraction in Syria.
