2015’s Most Livable Cities Revealed: Melbourne, Australia Claims Fifth Straight Title

The UK’s Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) recently released its “Global Liveability Ranking 2015,” with Melbourne, Australia, taking the top spot once again. This marks Melbourne’s fifth consecutive year as the world’s most livable city, while Taipei ranked 60th in this year’s list.

The EIU scores 140 cities worldwide each year based on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. In this year’s survey, Melbourne—situated along the Yarra River in Australia—not only boasts a pleasant climate but also exudes a rich cultural atmosphere. The city is home to the world’s highest concentration of commercial art galleries, Australia’s largest music festival, vibrant nightlife, and distinctive alleyways such as Hosier Lane’s street art. Coffee lovers will be in heaven, with over 2,000 cafes offering enticing brews. Whether it’s art, food, ecology, sports, or festivals, Melbourne earns high praise from judges and is a favorite among travelers, making it one of the Southern Hemisphere’s top tourist destinations.

Following Melbourne are Vienna, Austria; Vancouver, Canada; and Toronto, Canada, while Adelaide, Australia, and Calgary, Alberta, Canada, share fifth place.

Other major global cities such as Tokyo, Paris, New York, and London rank lower due to their massive scale, which leads to infrastructure strain and rising crime rates. This year, Tokyo is ranked 15th, Paris 29th, London 53rd, and New York 55th. Taipei is ranked 60th, while the bottom of the list is taken by war-torn Syria.
