Church of Our Lady of Tortosa

The Church of Our Lady of Tortosa is a Crusader-era church, built in the mid-12th century by the Knights Templar. Initially, it served both as a fortress and a church. Historians refer to it as “the best-preserved Crusader-era religious structure,” making it of great historical significance. Currently, the Church of Our Lady of Tortosa is the Tartus National Museum.

The defensive fortifications of the Church of Our Lady of Tortosa are the most well-preserved among all surviving Roman Catholic churches. On the northeast and southeast sides of the church, there are two rectangular, tower-like sacristies. The south and north walls of the church feature buttresses, possibly used for cover and firing positions during battles. The interior of the church is highly ornate, though apart from five arched windows near the main entrance, there are only a few decorative elements. More decorations might have prevented the space from feeling so spacious. Currently, as part of the Tartus National Museum, the Church of Our Lady of Tortosa houses jewelry, pottery, and statues.
