Nimrod Fortress

Nimrod Fortress was once used by the armies of the Ayyubid dynasty, -, the Mongol army, and the Mamluk dynasty's forces, becoming the battlefield of many fierce wars and serving as important evidence of history. Located in the northern part of the Golan Heights, it sits more than 800 meters above sea level and was built in the Middle Ages, around the year 1229.

In the 13th century, prolonged warfare caused damage to the fortress. After being conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1517, it began to be used as a prison to hold criminals. A major earthquake in the 18th century led to the collapse of the fortress. Today, Nimrod Fortress serves as a nature reserve, open for exploration and study. It is said that the intact fortress was 420 meters long and 120 meters wide, constructed from massive, hard stones. The castle walls featured many rectangular and semicircular towers, some of which still remain today.

Visitors can currently explore the remaining sections of Nimrod Fortress, yet even these remnants reflect its former glory. Entering through the eastern gate, one first encounters the “Secret Corridor,” with its winding stairs and underground water reservoirs that captivate the eye. Inside the fortress, you can also see an unusual type of window — large from the outside but small and narrow on the inside — with bullet holes from wartime still visible.
