Tongsa Dzong

Tongsa Dzong is one of the twenty dzongs in Bhutan, covering an area of 2,181 square kilometers with a population of approximately 19,460. Its capital is Tongsa. Located in Tongsa, the ancestral home of the Bhutanese royal family and nobility, this dzong and its township rank among the most spectacular scenic sites in Bhutan. The dzong was created in the early 17th century by Ngawang Namgyal — the first spiritual ruler of Bhutan — as a fortress-monastery that combined political, religious, and judicial functions. Nearly every major valley in Bhutan has a “dzong,” serving as a fortress to defend against invasions.

Situated at a strategic east-west military stronghold and perched atop a mountain at an altitude of 2,200 meters, Tongsa Dzong was built along the mountain’s contours by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1648. With centuries of history, it still stands firmly today, safeguarding the Bhutanese people. It played a key role in enabling Tongsa to effectively govern the entire region. Tongsa Dzong is the largest dzong (fortress) in Bhutan, with its temples, corridors, administrative offices, and monks’ residences intricately interwoven — a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture. In 2004, professional restoration efforts helped preserve this remarkable structure.
