Recently, COMO Hotels and Resorts partnered with Mastercard to support the “Purchase with Purpose” charity program. From October 1 to December 31, 2010, guests staying at COMO Hotels and Resorts properties — including Cocoa Island, Uma Paro, Uma Ubud, the Metropolitan Bangkok, and COMO Shambhala Estate — and paying with a Mastercard could participate in supporting local community charity efforts.

For every successful transaction, Mastercard will donate USD 30 to local charitable causes. Beneficiaries include a nunnery in Bhutan, a care center for individuals with intellectual disabilities, and several schools and orphanages located in remote villages and small towns.

In addition to the “Purchase with Purpose” program, COMO properties engage in year-round collaborations with various partners through funding, capacity building, staff involvement, and skills development. Known as the “COMO Approach,” this initiative focuses on developing and operating COMO Hotels and Resorts properties in a sustainable and responsible manner, with the aforementioned community investments being part of the COMO Approach.

In Kela Geompa, Bhutan, 58 Buddhist nuns aged between 13 and 84 reside in the Kela Goemba nunnery atop Cheele La. For every Mastercard “Purchase with Purpose” transaction, a “three-month essentials package” will be provided for each nun. The package includes toothbrushes, toothpaste, cold cream, soap, shampoo, laundry soap, and feminine hygiene products. (Image provided by COMO Hotels and Resorts)

The Sari Hati Foundation (meaning “the essence of the heart”) is a small, community-based education center initiated by volunteers, located in Banjar Lungsiakan — the same village where the resort is situated. The center provides a nurturing environment for teenagers with intellectual disabilities and their families, aiming to help them integrate into the community. The collaboration between Uma Ubud and Mastercard ensures the center can provide lunches for two and a half years and 80 weeks of art classes.
