The Selangor River, also known as the Firefly River, is located in Kuala Selangor District of Selangor State. During the day, there’s nothing particularly unusual about the river, but at night, it transforms into a paradise for fireflies. The banks of the Selangor River are home to a large population of beautiful fireflies. Nestled among the riverside vegetation, they form an extremely beautiful and rare natural spectacle when night falls.

In the lower reaches of the Selangor River grows a type of mangrove called Sonneratia caseolaris, which is ideal for the habitat of a species of firefly known as the “Malaysian micro firefly.” Swarms of fireflies cling to the Sonneratia trees along the riverbanks. When dusk falls, tens of thousands of these glowing insects move or stay still in perfect unison, flashing on and off simultaneously—like the lights on a Christmas tree—shining brilliantly within the mangrove forests along the Selangor River. It's a spectacular natural wonder that creates one of the world’s most amazing sights. In the deep silence of the night, when all is quiet, only the luminous fireflies remain, flickering softly as if humming a gentle lullaby.

The best way to enjoy this firefly-lit river is by drifting quietly along the water in a small boat. The fireflies are most numerous and brightest between one hour after sunset and the early hours of the morning. Nights that are rain-free and have little moonlight are the most ideal for viewing. It’s said that camera flashes can disturb the fireflies, so photography is not allowed within the park.
