Fort Siloso

Introduction

Fort Siloso was originally built in 1880 to protect ships entering and leaving the port of Singapore. During World War II, British forces held their ground here against the Japanese. After the British surrendered to Japan on February 15, 1942, Fort Siloso became part of a prisoner-of-war camp that detained both military and civilian personnel. When the British withdrew from Singapore in 1967 and returned Sentosa Island to the Singapore government, the island was handed over to the Sentosa Development Corporation in 1975, giving Fort Siloso a new lease on life as a tourist attraction. Today, it is the only well-preserved coastal fort in Singapore, with remnants including underground tunnels, ammunition storage, a lookout tower, a lighthouse, and vintage cannons. The fort has also been enhanced with a new military museum and sound effects that narrate its past, allowing visitors to experience its history through audio and storytelling. The renovated Fort Siloso now features a special tram service that takes visitors from the foot of the hill up to the fort. Upon arrival, guests can choose among three different routes to explore.
