Maghain Aboth Synagogue

Maghain Aboth Synagogue is located on Waterloo Street in Singapore’s Central Region. “Maghain Aboth” means “Shield of Our Fathers.” Built in 1878, it is the oldest synagogue in Southeast Asia and was gazetted as a National Monument of Singapore in 1998.

At Maghain Aboth Synagogue, you can discover everything about Singapore’s early Jewish community. Although there are other Jewish buildings nearby, Maghain Aboth remains the most well-known. The exterior of the synagogue is quite simple, yet the interior features meticulously refined design. The synagogue uniquely blends Victorian and colonial architectural styles—its marble floors and large shutters contrast beautifully with teak wood and rattan benches, creating a grand and impressive atmosphere. Singapore’s small Jewish community also holds regular services here, and Jewish festivals are celebrated on-site, making it a must-visit attraction in Singapore.
