Kranji War Cemetery

Kranji War Cemetery is located in Kranji, in the northern part of Singapore. It was established to commemorate the soldiers who fought and died defending Singapore against the Japanese during World War II. These brave warriors came from Britain, Australia, Canada, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.

The war cemetery is made up of three sections: the Memorial Wall, the State Cemetery, and the Military Graves. The Military Graves represent the three branches of the military—Air Force, Navy, and Army. A tower symbolizes the Army, a building shaped like aircraft wings represents the Air Force, and a periscope on top of a structure represents the Navy, thereby honoring the efforts of all three military forces. The Memorial Wall bears the names of 24,000 soldiers whose remains could not be found, but the people of Singapore will never forget their names and will keep them in their hearts. The State Cemetery houses the graves of 4,458 soldiers, among whom the identities of 850 individuals remain unknown.

The heroes resting in Kranji War Cemetery are great; they gave their lives for peace around the world and are worthy of remembrance and reverence by people everywhere. During commemorative events, poppies are laid on the neatly arranged graves on the well-manicured lawns, and people observe a moment of silence for one or two minutes.
