Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is located in Katong, Singapore, and has a history dating back 150 years. In the 1850s, Indian immigrants discovered a statue of the god “Vishnu” (referred to here as “维那雅加”) by a pond, and later built a simple temple beneath a sacred Pergola tree, hence the name “Sri Pergola Vishnu”. It is the second oldest Hindu temple in Singapore.

Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is built in the architectural style of the Chola dynasty of South India from the 7th century and is known for its exquisite carvings and motifs. Its main structure is a five-story building standing 21 meters tall, with teak doors that are 4.5 meters high—this great height was designed to allow the king to enter on elephant back. The roof of the temple is adorned with carvings of numerous deities, and the four granite pillars standing in the hall feature 32 murals depicting scenes from the birth of Lord Vishnu to his wedding, together illustrating 32 different forms of Lord Vishnu. These depictions are the most unique aspect of Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple and are not found in any other Vishnu temples, even within India.
