Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is located in the northwest of Singapore. Established in 2002, it covers an area of 130 acres and is Singapore’s first wetland reserve. Serving as a crucial stopover for migratory birds, it holds significant international importance and has been recognized by the International Wetlands Organization. In 2003, it was included in the ASEAN Heritage Parks list.

To escape the cold winter, migratory birds fly from Siberia to the warmer Australia, and this reserve serves as a resting place during their long journey. During the bird migration season, the reserve attracts not only numerous birds but also birdwatchers. The birds become subjects for photography, and species that can be spotted include whimbrels, common greenshanks, redshanks, Mongolian plovers, curlew sandpipers, common sandpipers, yellow bitterns, and cinnamon bitterns. Crabs and mudskippers are among the main wildlife in the coastal zone of the reserve, and during high tide, you may also spot mantis shrimp. With some luck, visitors might even see rare species such as smooth-coated otters, estuarine crocodiles, cotton pygmy geese, and Southeast Asia’s largest Atlas moth.

Since its establishment, the reserve has been providing nature education programs for schools and the public. It has also published various educational travel guides, instruction manuals, magazines, and more, aiming to raise environmental awareness among students and the general public.
