Semakau Island is located in the southern part of Singapore and officially opened to the public in 2005. This island is quite unique—unlike most ordinary islands, it is the world’s first landfill island primarily built using inorganic waste, namely ash from Singapore’s four incineration plants. Semakau Island is the only landfill island in Singapore. Although it is an island created from waste, the trash has been incinerated, so there is no unpleasant odor.

The island boasts fresh air and crystal-clear waters, along with a variety of recreational activities that attract many visitors, such as fishing, picnicking, birdwatching, cycling, stargazing, and island walks. Thanks to its pristine environment, plants and wildlife on Semakau Island remain free from destruction and pollution. The flourishing native species give the island a vibrant and lively atmosphere. The lush mangroves and colorful coral reefs are also among its most distinctive features. The island has large areas of seagrass, making it home to Singapore’s largest accessible seagrass beds for close-up viewing by visitors.
